Plethora of Sony News from ‘Destination Playstation’

Today at Sony Computer Entertainment’s Destination Playstation event they announced a new PS3 Bundle, a new PSP bundle, among other tidbits of info.

First in the wave of announcements is that there will be a new Bundle option for the Playstation 3. It will come with the 80GB PS3 model, the new Dualshock 3 wireless controller, and a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, all for $499. The bundle will release along side Metal Gear Solid 4 on June 12. Additionally if you would like to purchase the Dualshock 3 separately, they will be available in April for $55.

The next announcement was of a God of War PSP bundle. Dubbed “The ‘Limited-Edition’ God of War Entertainment Pack”, it will include a ‘Deep Red’ PSP with Kratos immortalized on the back, a copy of God of War: Chains of Olympus, Superbad UMD, and a voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from the Playstation Store on PC. It will release in June for $200.

Additionally, if you pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots, (set to release world-wide on June 12) you are guaranteed access into the Metal Gear Online beta when it begins in April. It’s not clear whether pre-orders of the MGS4 PS3 bundle will count toward this or not, but it’s always good when developers create incentive to pre-order.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, stars Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter searching for the lost treasure of Sir Francis Drake. During the course of the game, Drake will travel to exotic locations and fight off ruthless pirates to find out the mystery of Francis Drake’s last voyage.

The story, while good, can be a tad predicable at times. It has some nice plot twists, and a very satisfyingly ending . Uncharted also features amazing cutscenes, some great voice work, and a powerful score, which really adds to the atmosphere. The game’s presentation is top-notch.

Things go boom!

Gameplay wise, the game lacks a little originality. The shooting and cover mechanics seem ripped straight from “Gears of War” and its health mechanic is similar as well. Drake is only allowed two weapons at a time and a small stash of grenades. Weapon variety is nice (pistols, assault rilfes, etc.), and all are based on real world weapons.
