A good trailer can sell a product almost on it’s own. This trend tends to apply more to movies than games, but every so often there’s an exception.
The Gears of War trailers have always pulled me in, due to the unconventional combination’s they often involve. For a game where you chainsaw people in half, and fire tons of guns one would probably expect some thrashing metal music to accompany a trailer meant to showcase the title. Instead the trailers tend to stick with less intrusive music, which usually benefits the depicted scene. The world’s first look at a third installment is no different.
The first Gears of War trailer used Gary Jules cover of Mad World to set the tone of the world you would be playing a part in during the game, but nothing in time I spent with the game really matched the atmosphere of what that initial trailer evoked. I think if the game introduced a large scale action scene with subdued gunfire sounds, and a song/voiceover (while the player remains in control) it would lead to a more memorable experience.
Also I think it’s pretty ridiculous how many people are flipping out that a female character is in the game. I can understand being pleasantly surprised by it, but headlines asking “Should She Be Chainsawable?” are just stupid. It’s a female soldier, not a dainty, suburban soccer mom. Then again when those sites devote posts to Lady Gaga’s Tattoo’s and ‘Watch us shake this Carton of Orange Juice!’ we shouldn’t really expect realistic acceptance of a girl in a game with guns.
Gears of War 3 is set for release on April 5, 2011. Oh and the song featured in the announcement trailer is Sun Kil Moon- Heron Blue.
