It’s been a while since we last heard from Sam & Max. Telltale Game’s has been very busy working on such wonderful series’ like Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, Wallace & Gromit’s Cracking Adventures, and of course Tales of Monkey Island. Now, nearly 2 years since the second season drew to a close (with a difference of five days) our favorite Freelance Police officers are returning to the realm of episodic gaming with “The Devil’s Playhouse”.
By the look of things, The Devil’s Playhouse is changing things up quite a bit. The first thing you’ll notice is the vast improvements to how the game looks. In an interview with Telltale, there was mention of the shadow system being upgraded, as well as higher resolution textures. In addition to visual upgrades, the player will have direct control over character movement (much like in Tales of Monkey Island). This time around, the player will have some control over both Sam AND Max (previous games have you playing as Sam, with Max always near by). Finally the game will adopt the consistent story approach seen in Tales of Monkey Island. While still episodic, the season has an overall story that branches across all episodes.
The five episode series kick off April 15th with The Penal Zone, and conclude in August. Buttonbasher will be reviewing the series, much like we have done with previous Telltale Games series, so stay tuned for more coverage!
